Chauvinistic. Demeaning. Violent. Forget what you know about adult films: Erika Lust is a “sex-positive” producer of erotica that celebrates women. She’s part of a new generation of feminists who are working to enrich the sexual charge for female viewers, which studies show are on the rise.

“Sex-positive feminism is the idea that women should have the right to their own sexuality as human beings,” she says. “I always felt that there was a great need to see female sexuality portrayed in a positive way on the screen.”

Lust has long been a fan of film, and after working for a production company in Barcelona, she decided to start her own company. Her background in political science, feminism, and gender studies encouraged her to pursue porn, ready to challenge the male-dominated industry.

Traditional porn rarely represents real-life women or their sexual response. “Women are normally there in those films just as a pure object,” says Lust. Her mission is to break the stereotype of the typical adult actress.

“It’s very, very important for me to find the right people — someone who wants to be there, someone who is a bit of an exhibitionist,” she says.

What’s more, feminist porn attempts to get more women involved in the production process. Her company, which includes 15 women working behind the scenes, shoots in a safe-sex environment, meaning equal pay, everything performed is previously agreed upon, and every performer provides up-to-date STD checks whether they choose to use condoms or not.

“I think my voice and other female filmmakers’ voices are very needed out there,” Lust says. Follow her for an intimate look at feminist porn production.
