According to Pinterest, searches for the perfect summer hairstyle are in full swing, and while beach waves are a seasonal staple, apparently Pinners are looking for fresh ways to give the simple ponytail a stylish upgrade. Makes sense as the struggles of wearing your hair down in this heat and humidity are enough to make anyone reach for a hair tie. Anyway, in the sea of ideas on social media — ranging from super-sleek to messy — one unexpected style stands out this season: the bubble ponytail.

Probably pictured in your childhood photo albums, hairstylists are giving the youthful look a modern makeover with tons of texture and grit. Saves for the bubbly pony have skyrocketed since celebs like Kendall Jenner, Olivia Culpo, Blake Lively, and Molly Sims have been seen sporting the style. “This ‘do really updates the classic ponytail in a fun and modern way,” said celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin of the version she created for Jenner.

Stylish yet shockingly simple, it’s the perfect hairstyle to take you from a spin class to a sunset wedding. The real beauty of it, though, is that it works best on dirty hair. Seriously, the natural oils from your scalp, dry shampoo buildup, and even the salt water from a day spent at the shore make it easier to build volume and create the bubbly texture.

To get the look, start by prepping hair with a dry shampoo or texturizing spray. We like Drybar Triple Sec 3-In-1 ($26; sephora.com), a dry spray that tousles strands. If your hair is fine or easily falls flat, tease your hair at the roots for added volume up top.

Next, pull half of your hair back and secure with an elastic at the crown of your head, then tease the ponytail. Gather it with the bottom half and secure with an elastic at the nape of your neck. Add another elastic a couple of inches below, repeating down the length of the ponytail.

Tease in between each elastic and use your fingers to tug at the hair to thicken the “bubbles.” Finish with a mist of hairspray. For added impact, top each bubble a scrunchie.
